Searching for delisted loan apps in Nigeria returns dozens of “full lists”, and they do not agree with each other. This guide explains what delisted, blacklisted and watchlisted mean, shows the one named list we could trace to a dated news report, and tells you how to check any app yourself.

Delisted, blacklisted and watchlisted: what the terms mean

  • Delisted: the app was removed from app stores after regulatory action.
  • Blacklisted: news outlets use this word for apps the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has declared non-compliant. Many reports use it interchangeably with “delisted”.
  • Watchlisted: the app or its operator is under closer scrutiny. Legit.ng reports that a place on the watch list does not by itself prove wrongdoing, but it signals unresolved regulatory concerns.

Because outlets mix these words, always check the date and the source of any list you read.

Delisted loan apps in Nigeria: the September 2023 list

BusinessDay reported on 12 September 2023 that 37 apps were delisted, following action pushed by the FCCPC. Statuses can change, so confirm any app on the FCCPC register before you act.

Why you should not trust every list of delisted loan apps in Nigeria

  • Counts conflict. One January 2026 report gives 45 in its headline and 46 in its address. Another gives 45, 25 and 18 for the same category.
  • Old names return. Many names in the 2026 lists reported by Legit.ng also appear in the September 2023 list. A list labelled “updated 2026” may be an older list repackaged.
  • No official list was linked. The January 2026 reports credit a post by the FCCPC on X and link to the FCCPC registration page, but we could not find an official notice that prints the 45 names. For that reason we do not republish them here.
  • Status changes. An app can move between categories, and the FCCPC register is the reference that matters.

How to check any loan app today

  1. Open the FCCPC register of digital money lenders and look for the company behind the app. The approval table on that page listed more than 470 entries when we checked, and the page was last modified on 3 March 2026.
  2. Match the company name to the developer name on Google Play or the seller name on the App Store. The spelling must be exact.
  3. Treat an app that is not listed as unapproved. Under the DEON Regulations, digital lending requires FCCPC approval, and a CBN-licensed microfinance bank must still apply for approval or a waiver.

Our step-by-step guide covers this in detail: how to check if a loan app is FCCPC approved. If an app fails the check, see the red flags of fake loan apps.

If you already borrowed from a delisted or blacklisted app

  • Keep every record: screenshots of the loan terms, repayment receipts, messages and call logs.
  • Do not pay into a personal bank account, and do not share your PIN, OTP or banking password with anyone.
  • Deny permissions such as contacts and photos, and uninstall the app once you have saved your records.
  • Whether you still owe money is a legal question. Seek independent legal advice before you decide how to respond.
  • If the lender harasses you or your contacts, report it. Our guide explains how to report loan app harassment in Nigeria.

Frequently asked questions

Are delisted loan apps in Nigeria illegal?

Delisting means the app was removed from app stores after regulatory action. Under the DEON Regulations, digital lending without FCCPC approval is not permitted, so an unregistered lender is operating outside the rules.

Is the watch list the same as a ban?

No. A watch list signals closer scrutiny. Legit.ng reports that a listing does not automatically mean wrongdoing.

Where is the official list of approved lenders?

The FCCPC publishes it on its digital money lenders registration page. Check there before you download or borrow.

Can a delisted app come back?

Statuses can change, which is why a name on an old list does not settle the question today. Check the current FCCPC register.
