Figures are for the trading day of Wednesday, 21 October 2026, and were reported on 22 October. They change daily, so check a live source before you transact.

The naira exchange rate edged lower against the dollar, the pound and the euro at Nigeria’s official foreign exchange market on 21 October 2026. The moves were small, well under 0.2% for each currency, and rates at the parallel market and at bank desks were reported as steady.

This guide sets out the numbers, what was said to be behind them, what Deutsche Bank’s new view on the naira means, and what to keep in mind if you buy, sell or receive foreign currency.

The official naira exchange rate moved only slightly on 21 October.

How big was the “loss”? Headlines said the naira lost ground, but the dollar rate rose by only ₦1.07, about 0.08%. In the same week, the official close was ₦1,334.20 per dollar on 16 October and ₦1,333.50 on 19 October (Nairametrics), so the rate has stayed in a narrow band.

NFEM stands for the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market, the official market overseen by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). A weaker naira means you need more naira to buy one unit of foreign currency. Legit.ng reports that these figures are based on CBN data. We could not open the CBN’s daily table to check them directly, but the dollar figures sit in line with the closes of 16 and 19 October.

Parallel market and bank desk rates

Neither rate came with a previous-day figure, so the “stable” and “flat” descriptions cannot be checked. Parallel rates also vary by dealer, city and source. Another outlet, Within Nigeria, reported street sellers asking up to ₦1,390 on the same day. Treat any single parallel figure as an indication, not a fixed price.

Trading activity

CBN data cited by Legit.ng show that interbank foreign exchange turnover rose by about 110% to $127.63 million on 21 October, from $60.72 million the session before. The number of deals rose to 95 from 70. Higher turnover on a day when the rate barely moved suggests more trading at similar prices, not a sharp shift in value.

What is said to be behind the stability

  • Remittances and reserves. The report credits stronger formal remittance inflows and higher external reserves, without giving figures. For reserves, Nairametrics reported $54.61 billion on 14 September, above the CBN’s projected year-end level of about $51.04 billion.
  • Strong demand for dollars. Nairametrics also noted that foreign exchange demand reached a 15-year high of $18.34 billion in the second quarter of 2026, so stability has come alongside heavy demand.
  • Analyst outlook. Unnamed analysts quoted by Legit.ng expect the trend to continue in the near term, but warn that rising government borrowing could be a risk.

Deutsche Bank adds Nigeria to a frontier currency monitor

On 19 October, Deutsche Bank added Nigeria to its frontier FX monitor, saying the naira looks undervalued and that relatively high real interest rates make carry trades attractive. It named fiscal pressure as the main risk to the outlook. The reports did not give a target rate for the naira. Nairametrics’ range of ₦1,290 to ₦1,370 per dollar is its own projection, not the bank’s.

What this means if you deal in foreign currency

  • Compare more than one source. Official, bank-desk and parallel rates differ, and so do dealers’ quotes.
  • Check the date and time. A rate quoted on 21 October may be out of date by the time you read it.
  • Mind the spread. The rate you pay or receive includes the dealer’s margin, which is usually wider than the official mid-rate.
  • Plan for movement. Small daily changes can add up for large or repeated payments.

Watch out for fraud. Be wary of “dealers” who offer rates far better than the market, ask for payment before a transfer, or contact you first on social media. Use licensed banks, authorised dealers and licensed remittance services, and keep proof of every transaction.

Conclusion

The naira exchange rate moved only slightly on 21 October. The official dollar rate ended at ₦1,334.72, close to the levels of the previous week, and turnover rose sharply.
