Why the naira to dollar rate has two prices
The official rate is the price at which banks and authorised dealers trade on the formal foreign exchange market, and the CBN publishes it. The parallel rate is the price in the informal cash market. It varies by trader, city and time of day, and it is not an official rate.
The gap was about ₦30 on 15 October (₦1,362 against ₦1,331.61). Using the 17 October parallel quote of ₦1,390 against the 15 October official close, the gap was about ₦58, or around 4%. Those two figures come from different dates and sources, so read them as a rough range, not a precise spread.
What is driving the naira to dollar rate
- Interest rate policy. In September 2026 the CBN reset its Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) to 23% from 26.5%. The bank described the move as a recalibration, not a change in policy stance, after the MPR had drifted away from market rates, with the interbank rate near 22% (Nairametrics).
- Inflation. Nairametrics reports that inflation was 15.39% in August 2026, the third straight monthly moderation.
- Reserves. WithinNigeria, citing CBN data, puts net foreign reserves at about $46 billion.
- Forecasts. WithinNigeria lists earlier forecasts of ₦1,350 to ₦1,450 (Cordros Securities), ₦1,470 to ₦1,520 (SBM Intelligence) and about ₦1,450 by December (Fitch). Forecasts change and are not a guarantee.
What the naira to dollar rate means for loan app borrowers
If your loan is in naira, the amount you owe is set in naira in your agreement. A move in the dollar rate does not change that figure directly. The effects are indirect, and they are general economic effects, not rules:
- A weaker naira can raise the cost of imported goods and fuel, which can squeeze a household budget and make repayment harder.
- The CBN’s policy rate does not set loan app prices. Each lender sets its own interest and fees, so compare the total cost, not the headline rate. Our guide shows how to choose a loan app in Nigeria and compare real cost.
- Borrow only from registered lenders. See how to check if a loan app is FCCPC approved, and read the red flags of fake loan apps.
- Do not take a short-term loan to buy dollars. If the rate moves against you, you still owe the naira repayment on the due date.
How to check the naira to dollar rate yourself
- Use the CBN exchange rates page for official rates.
- Compare at least two reports and check the date on each one.
- For a real transaction, ask your bank or an authorised dealer for a written quote.
