Two passport indices published in October 2026 seem to tell opposite stories about Nigeria. One places the green passport 181st out of 196 countries, with only 24 visa-free destinations. The other puts it 92nd and counts 45 destinations that need no visa in advance. Both numbers are being quoted in the news, often side by side.
This guide explains what each index measures, where the Nigerian passport ranking stands in each, who leads the tables, and what the figures mean for anyone planning to travel.
Did the Nigerian passport really fall from 90th to 181st? Not on the evidence we found. Some headlines set the 90th place recorded in July 2026 against the new 181st place, but Economy Post and MSME Africa attribute the July figure (90th, with 44 destinations) to the Henley Passport Index, and the 181st place to IziVisa. They are different indices with different methods, and the reports we reviewed give no earlier IziVisa rank for Nigeria, so a change within IziVisa cannot be measured yet. The reports also give no official explanation for the figures.

How the Nigerian passport ranking is measured
IziVisa: three kinds of access, counted separately
IziVisa scores passports by the travel access their holders have: visa-free entry, visa on arrival, and electronic visa (e-visa). The three are not equal. Visa-free travel needs no permit, a visa on arrival is issued at the border, and an e-visa must be approved online before you fly. For Nigeria, reports list 24 visa-free, 16 visa-on-arrival and 43 e-visa destinations, which together give access to 83 destinations of some kind. The reports do not explain how these counts combine into the overall rank.
Henley: destinations you can reach without a visa in advance
The Henley Passport Index, compiled by Henley & Partners, ranks passports by the number of destinations their holders can enter without obtaining a visa before departure. It uses data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Its ranking covers 199 passports and 227 destinations, according to reports on its July 2026 edition. It measures travel access only; it does not decide who is eligible for a work, study or residence visa.
Why the numbers do not match
The two methods count different things, so they cannot be compared directly. The Nigerian passport ranking looks very different in each index partly because of how each one treats visas on arrival and e-visas. One report suggests the gap may come from Henley leaving out standard e-visas, but it presents this only as a possibility. Even the denominators differ: IziVisa ranks 196 countries, yet quotes the top passport’s access out of 198 destinations, and the reports do not explain why.

Who leads the tables
| Index | Leaders |
|---|---|
| Henley | 1st Singapore (193 destinations); joint 2nd Japan, South Korea and the UAE (188 each); 3rd Sweden (187); joint 4th Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France and Germany (186 each) |
| IziVisa | 1st UAE, with access to 185 of 198 destinations; 2nd Switzerland, with 120 visa-free, 26 visa-on-arrival and 37 e-visa destinations. Luxembourg, Malta, Denmark, Spain and Finland are also named near the top |
The UAE appears near the top of both lists, but Singapore leads only in Henley’s count.
Nigeria on the Henley index over time
| Edition | Rank | Visa-free destinations |
|---|---|---|
| 2006 | 62nd | Not reported |
| October 2025 | 94th | 44 |
| April 2026 | 89th | 44 |
| July 2026 | 90th | 44 |
| October 2026 | 92nd | 45 |
The October 2026 edition is a two-place improvement on a year earlier, though the rank slipped from 89th in April. Because Henley publishes updates through the year, compare like with like: the same month, or the same edition, from one year to the next.
What the Nigerian passport ranking means for travellers
A lower rank does not mean you cannot travel, but it can mean more steps before you do. Reports note that limited visa-free access can bring higher fees, more documents and longer waits before departure. In practice:
- Check the rule for your exact destination. Visa-free, visa on arrival and e-visa are different processes, and the rules can change.
- Use official sources. Confirm entry requirements with the destination’s embassy or immigration authority, and with your airline, before you pay for tickets.
- Apply early for e-visas. An e-visa must be approved before you travel, so leave time for processing.
- Keep documents ready. Many countries ask for proof of accommodation, funds and a return ticket, even when no visa is needed.

Watch out for visa scams. Be wary of agents who promise a “guaranteed visa”, “visa-free entry” for a fee, or a quick approval through a contact inside an embassy. Pay visa fees only on official government websites or through the embassy’s published process, and never share passport scans or payment details with unverified social media accounts.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Nigerian passport ranking in 2026?
It depends on the index. The Nigerian passport ranking is 92nd on the Henley Passport Index (October 2026) and 181st of 196 countries on the IziVisa index, as reported in October 2026.
How many countries can Nigerians visit without a visa?
IziVisa reports 24 visa-free destinations for Nigerian passport holders, plus 16 visa-on-arrival and 43 e-visa destinations. Henley counts 45 destinations that need no visa in advance. The figures differ because the two indices count differently.
Why is Nigeria 181st on one index and 92nd on another?
The indices use different methods, destination lists and ways of treating visas on arrival and e-visas, so their ranks cannot be compared directly.
Did Nigeria’s ranking fall from 90th to 181st?
Not on the evidence we found. The 90th place reported for July 2026 is attributed to Henley, while the 181st place comes from IziVisa. They are different indices.
Which passport is the strongest in the world?
In Henley’s October 2026 table, Singapore leads with 193 destinations. In IziVisa’s index, the UAE leads with access to 185 of 198 destinations.
Does a passport ranking decide whether I can get a visa?
No. The indices measure how many destinations you can reach without a visa in advance. They do not decide whether you qualify for a work, study or residence visa.
Conclusion
The headline numbers, 181st and 24 destinations on one side and 92nd and 45 on the other, describe two different measurements, not a single collapse or recovery. The Nigerian passport ranking is best read as a snapshot from each index, with its method in mind. For travellers, the practical lesson is the same whichever table you read: confirm the entry rule for each country, use official sources, and allow time for any visa you need.
